Kingston Wi-Drive - PC Magazine

Design, File Support, and Streaming
Flip over an older iPhone 3G or 3GS, and you could mistake it for the Wi-Drive. The small drive measures 4.8 by 2.4 by 0.4 inches (HWD), and won’t take up too much space in your bag. It has a minimal look, with a logo on its front along with a light that blinks when data is being transferred and LED indicators for Internet and device connectivity. The Power button lives on the right; it blinks when it’s charging and glows when it’s on. Otherwise, there’s not much to see here.

In my mind, the most compelling reason to buy the Wi-Drive (unless you bought a 64GB device and just really need more storage) is that it makes it easier to add content to your devices. Rather than relying on iTunes, managing your content is a simple, drag-and-drop operation. When you plug the Wi-Drive into your computer (PC or Mac), it shows up just like any other external hard drive, and you can drag and drop files right onto the drive. Kingston suggests organizing your files into folders like “Music” and “Videos,” but you don’t need to.

You can add any type of file to the drive, but you’ll only be able to stream files that iOS devices support. For me, that limit was felt most in video, since the Wi-Drive won’t play .AVI files. Music, images and documents are more versatile.

The companion to the Wi-Drive is a free app that connects to the drive and streams content. The app is where you control everything on the Wi-Drive, from setting an optional Wi-Fi password to upgrading the firmware. The upside is that the interface is better than just using a file manager, and initiating the connection is as simple as launching an app; the downside is that it means, at least until Kingston develops more apps, you can’t stream content to anything other than an iOS device (iPhone, iPod (ipod touch firmware 3.1.3 download) touch, or iPad).

Once you download the app from the App Store and install it, getting content playing is simple. Turn on the Wi-Drive, and wait for the blinking blue light that means it’s broadcasting. Go to Settings on your iOS device, and choose the “Wi-Drive” Wi-Fi network. (The Wi-Drive supports 102.11g and n.) Once you’re connected, just fire up the Wi-Drive app and it’ll automatically catalog what’s on your drive. (Once, I had the app hang while trying to look through the hard drive, but a quick restart solved the problem.) Select a file to view from the simple, list-based menu, and it plays back in the app.

Kingston Wi-Drive Screenshot

You can stream from the Wi-Drive to as many as three iOS devices, which makes the drive a perfect solution for family car trips. I tested that theory, streaming the same video to an iPad, an iPhone, and an iPod (ipod touch firmware 3.1.3 download) touch simultaneously. The Wi-Drive worked well, and streamed to all three devices without any noticeable drop in quality. There was, however, a longer buffering period when more than one device was connected, as well as the occasional stutter in playback that I never encountered with only one device connected.

The Wi-Drive is rated for four hours of playback, which was close to what I experienced during testing. Because Wi-Fi streaming can be a power suck, be aware that it will also decrease your device’s battery life; using the two together is not a long-lasting solution. The Wi-Drive charges through its USB port, so it’ll charge and sync at the same time.

There were a couple of other, mostly minor issues, that I encountered when testing the Wi-Drive. When you plug the Wi-Drive into a computer, it stops broadcasting its wireless signal, and my devices would revert back to the Wi-Fi network they were connected to before, forcing me to re-connect manually once the Wi-Drive was unplugged. You can, fortunately, still access the Internet on your device while connected to the Wi-Drive, since it has a Wi-Fi passthrough feature. You’ll see serious speed drops, though. This is definitely a more useful device when there’s no other Wi-Fi connection around, but how often is that the case? The Wi-Drive also got a bit hot while streaming, but not problematically so.

The Wi-Drive is a handy gadget to have if you need more storage, want a backup of important files, or want to stream a movie to all your kids’ devices at once. AT $ 150 or $ 200, though, it’s an expensive add-on, especially when you compare it to traditional external hard drives. For the price you’re better off with a drive like Seagate’s GoFlex Satellite Mobile Wireless Storage ($ 199, 3.5 stars), which packs a lot more storage (500GB), supports more devices, and performs better as a regular external hard drive.

Cablevision Loses More Video Subs; Adds iPhone, Touch Apps - paidContent.org

Earnings

Like its MSO rivals, Cablevision (NYSE: CVC) saw more subscribers disappear, though it thinks it has a plan to retain the customers don't leave out of economic hardship and more inclined to choose an over-the-top service instead: the expansion of its iPad in-home viewing app to the iPhone and iPod (top 100 apps for ipod touch) touch.

Cablevision's Optimum App for iPhone and iPod (top 100 apps for ipod touch) follows the iPad version that debuted in April and allows viewers access to 300 channels of live TV and thousands of VOD titles. It also comes with DVR management, interactive guide information and search, and serves as an extra remote control. (More details in the release)

See more of our latest Mobile coverage
or add an alert for future coverage of Mobile.

While that's a nice little bonus, given that many cable households already have multiple TV sets in their home, it's hard to say how attractive watching a show in another room on your mobile device really is.

Neverthless, Cablevision's financial performance remained pretty healthy, if below analysts' expectations, despite the drop of 23,000 video customers, which was partly related to the continuing economic weakness in Q2 as well as increasing encroachment on the Long Island MSO's turf from Verizon's FiOS.

Apart from that, for the past few quarters, the Newsday business has been too small and weak for the company to break out results. Instead, the Long Island newspaper's performance is reflected in the "other" category, along with News 12 Networks, MSG Varsity, Clearview Cinemas, Cablevision Media Sales (fka "Rainbow Advertising Sales") and sundry administrative and operating costs.

The company did note that, not surprisingly, revenues were down at Newsday (as they are for most newspaper companies) and that the overall "other segment" was essentially flat (down 0.6 percent) at $ 116.4 million. Revenue growth at News 12, Clearview and Cablevision Media Sales helped to balance out the Newsday declines.

Boxee for iPad app now available - ZDNet (blog)

Summary: Discover and share videos with your Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr friends on your iPad with the Boxee for iPad app — even if you don't have a Boxee box in your living room.

If you primarily use your iPad to watch videos, then you may find the Boxee for iPad app handy — even if you don't have a Boxee box in your living room.

Not only does the app show you what your friends on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr are watching online, you can also discover new finds from the featured videos selected by the Boxee staff, bookmark and create playlists by queuing up videos to watch later, and send videos from your computer to your iPad using Wi-Fi and the Boxee Media Manager, without needing to convert file formats yourself.

Of course, if you have a Boxee box as well as an iPad, you can send your video playlists to your Boxee to enjoy them on your television at home. This download also includes the ability to turn your iPhone/iPod touch/iPad into a remote control for your Boxee via AirPlay. So when your Boxee box is within range of your iOS devices, Boxee will show up as a one of the targeted devices.

The Boxee for iPad app is available for download now. There is a also a firmware update for the Boxee that should be coming within the next couple of days. Hopefully Boxee will work on an app for Android devices next.

Boxee for iPad released; Boxee Box gets AirPlay support - SlashGear

Boxee has released Boxee for iPad, allowing users to begin watching content on their Apple tablet then transfer playback to their HTPC Boxee Box midway through, optionally controlling the whole thing from an iPhone-based remote app. The free iPad app [iTunes link] is accompanied by the new Boxee Media Manager, which can be used to stream video to the tablet from your PC or Mac; Boxee Box owners, meanwhile, can stream content in the other direction.

Meanwhile there's Boxee Box 1.2, the latest firmware release, which adds NFS and AFP support, boosted HTML5 handling in the browser, OS X Lion compatibility as a source for video files, and – among other things – experimental AirPlay support. iPhone, iPad and iPod (ipod touch firmware 3.1.3 download) touch users can now stream directly to their Boxee Box using the Apple technology.

There's also a new Boxee "Watch Later" bookmarklet, which allows you to queue up online videos you encounter while browsing so as to later watch them when you're in front of your Boxee Box or iPad. Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr integration is also supported. Full details of the new software here [pdf link].

New Google+ App Opens Door to Apple Ecosystem [VIDEO] - International Business Times

Google is building on top of the allure of its new social network, Google+, with the release of an updated app that will work on all Apple devices.

The move follows the release of an iPhone only app last month, which has now been enhanced to work on Apple’s iPad tablets and iPod Touch devices as well.

Google+ has enjoyed a meteoric rise in what analysts are calling the fastest growing website ever. In its first month the invite only service hi 25 million members.

While the rate of growth is unrivaled, the social network is still small in comparison to mature rivals Facebook and Twitter, which have 750 million and 200 million registered users, respectively.

Like us on Facebook

Google+ already works on the company’s own Android platform, giving it access to several millions of mobile handsets around the world. The updated app now gives it access to the Apple eco-system as well.

During Apple’s fiscal third quarter earnings, reported in July, the company said that it sold 7.5 million iPods, with the “Touch” model representing over half of that.

Apple also boosted production of the iPad, selling 9.5 million units in the quarter.

In all the company said it has over 222 million “iOS” devices in the field, giving Google’s new app ample opportunity to capitalize.

iOS 5 Beta 5 Released to Developers - Tapscape

In a surprising weekend move, Apple has released iOS 5 Beta 5 (build 9A5288d) to registered developers. Apple typically releases such builds on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Apple recommends backing up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod (ipod touch firmware 3.1.3 download) Touch with iTunes 10.5 Beta 4 or iCloud prior to installing iOS 5 beta 5 over-the-air. Users are instructed to then delete everything on their device by navigating to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content. After clearing their device, users can start the over-the-air update by going to Settings > General > Software Update.

While iOS 5 Beta 5 didn't exactly add anything notable, BoyGeniusReport was determined to compile a complete changelog.

Alongside the new firmware comes Xcode 4.2 Developer Preview 5 and iTunes 10.5 beta 5. Each component can be downloaded from the Apple Dev Center.

Find the best personalized news app for your iPhone and iPad - Macworld

Many apps give the news a personal touch—but which one should you download?

When Flipboard () hit the App Store last year, the personalized news app for the iPad turned out to be a revelation. There were already plenty of Twitter clients, Facebook apps, and RSS readers available for download—there were even apps that combined those streams of information into one. But none did it quite so elegantly, creating the sensation of effortlessly flipping through the magazine. Overnight, Flipboard reinvented the category.

A year later, Flipboard is still the class of "personalized news" apps—those offerings that take links from the user's selected social networks and news sources to provide a one-stop-shop of news aggregation. (These apps are different from news discovery apps like Zite, which use your preferences to seek out information from new and unexpected sources.) Because you can view the information sources anywhere, presentation is what really matters when it comes to these personalized news apps.

Flipboard has maintained its lead by never standing still—continually adding new features, including social networks like LinkedIn and Instagram, and working with publishers to craft optimized pages for their content. Other apps in this category can often do a fine job, but maybe miss an element or two that make Flipboard so appealing.

Take Pulp () for example. This $ 5 app from Acrylic Software doesn't try to compete with Flipboard's magazine style, instead turning its users into newspaper designers. You select the news feeds you want to read, then choose the layout. One, two, or three columns per page? Do you want a simple list of headlines from a news source, or a summary of each story? Pulp is so endlessly customizable, that it might actually be your fault if you don't like it, with one possible exception: There's no way to import your Facebook and Twitter feeds. If you're looking to combine all your information sources into one app, you'll have to look elsewhere.

You might try Taptu (). In many ways, this free offering is indistinguishable from Alphonso Labs' Pulse News (), which which recently won an Apple Design Award at June's Worldwide Developers Conference. Taptu is unlikely to win a design award—its homepage is too crammed with information, too claustrophobic: I counted 56 separate visual elements on the page when I used the app.

Luckily, Taptu's homepage is not your landing spot, it's your entry point. Click on any line—your Facebook or Twitter feed, or any one of a range of news and blog sources that you choose and organize—and you're given a single story to view. You can flip through the stories by swiping the page. It's not quite as leisurely as Flipboard—you can power through your feeds fairly quickly in this fashion—but it's not quite the explosion of information you first encounter, either.

Taptu offers some degree of customization. Once you import feeds, you can organize them into categories by dragging feeds on top of one another to create what Taptu calls a mixed stream. You can then rename the stream—"Sports Sources," say—and add a splash of color to make it easier to spot at a glance. Still, I think that if you want to follow a lot of information sources, Taptu can be unwieldy.

Whatever their drawbacks, though, the preceding apps beat the pants off two new offerings from "old media" companies—Trove (), from the Washington Post, and News.Me(), from the New York Times (via Bit.ly). These newspapers take social networking and news aggregation and make those concepts boring and clunky.

News.Me takes the links posted by the friends in your Twitter feed—no other social networking service has input—and displays it in a more attractive summary form. The user interface is attractive and easy to use: You can use your thumb and forefinger to stretch a story in the list, seeing more of it, or you can tap to see the entire story in a clean, readable, ad-free format.

But News.Me doesn't give you access to your Twitter lists. And unlike Flipboard, it doesn't let you add additional feeds within the app. If you like @BreakingNews but don't want it cluttering your main Twitter feed, you're out of luck: there's no way to access it from News.Me. The limitations become irritating, though, because you have to pay for them: $ 1 a week or $ 35 a year. It's not worth it.

Trove is a little better. Instead of Twitter, Facebook is the foundation, taking your "likes" and creating news feeds about those topics. The problem is design: Click on a story in Trove, and you're automatically whisked to an in-app browser to read. That's not awful, but services like Readability and apps like Flipboard, Zite, and even News.Me have trained me to expect a more visually consistent reading experience. The bigger problem on iPad is Trove's unending grid of equally weighted stories—it's easy for the eyes to get lost.

That's not a problem with Editions by AOL (), a recent entrant into the category of news-gathering apps. It features an elegant, Flipboard-style layout that's easy to view. The app offers a bit of a twist, asking for access to your AOL/AIM account—in addition to Facebook and Twitter—to shape the news it offers you. Once you've done that, you can further customize what kind of news you'd like to see, and what sources are included in the roundup.

One thing that Editions does differently from its competitors: It only "publishes" the news once a day—offering itself not as a 24-7 aggregator, but instead as more customizable version of News Corp.'s The Daily. (The difference being, of course, that The Daily features only its own originally-produced content.) If you're a news junkie who requires a constant stream of headlines, you'll want to skip this app.

Except for Flipboard, Editions by AOL, and Pulp, each of the preceding apps works on the iPhone and iPod (top 100 apps for ipod touch) touch, either as a universal offering or a separate app. One of the chief charms of Smartr ()—a free offering from Factyle—is its focus on the old-fashioned iPhone. Smartr takes the links your friends post to Twitter and Facebook, and converts them into an attractive summary list of news stories and blog posts optimized for the iPhone. One minor complaint: the Twitter and Facebook streams must be viewed separately. Apps like SocialPhone show that those feeds can be combined; it would be nice to have the option here.

But if you're sticking with the iPad, Flipboard probably remains your best bet. It has the best design, the most intuitive interface, the unmatched integration with the most social networks. Flipboard's competitors are catching up—but they still have a ways to go.

It's a graceful transition, and one that preserves the excellent platforming action of the original to the letter. The graphics are delightfully retro, and the depth involved is enough to keep the ball rolling for many hours of gameplay.

In Emberwind, players assume the persona of Kindle, a hapless gnome sentry charged with ridding Grendale of a gremlin infestation. These gremlins come from a super villain by the curious name of CandleFinger, which sets the tone of the app perfectly.

Kickin Momma, $ .99, Released August 4

Kickin Momma by Hothead Games Inc. is a puzzle game for iOS that Peggle-lovers will go nuts for. Kickin Momma is a mother who literally punts her children so that they can collect gems for a new necklace that she so desperately wants.

I don't know what kind of creature she is, but I love this woman. She is definitely my kind of momma. You know — the kind without any sort of actual courtesy for her own flesh and blood at all. The kind that will sacrifice the safety of her little ones to feed her own selfish needs. I mean, come on, she drop kicks her children into oblivion for her own self-gain. What is there not to love about her? What is there not to love about the entire scenario?

Does Apple Still Signing iOS 4.1 & iOS 4.2.1 For iPhone 3GS & iPod (ipod touch firmware 3.1.3 download) touch 2G ? - All about the iPhone (blog)

We are already aware of the fact that Apple stops signing older firmware version as soon as newer ones are pushed into iTunes for download. But it seems that there are some unexpected changes when it comes to iOS 4.1 and iOS 4.2.1 software versions. Reportedly, an iDB user has tried to confirm about it for the last 3 weeks through SHSHit app. The SHSHit application via Cydia allows you to save SHSH blobs of current firmware version right onto your iDevice, that is, without the need of attaching it to your PC/Mac.

However, we haven't tried restoring to iOS 4.1 yet. If Apple, by any chance is restoring iOS 4.1 on iPhone 3GS or iPod (ipod touch firmware 3.1.3 download) touch 2G then it would be  a golden opportunity for factory unlocked users to get their untethered JailBreak. Otherwise, you can restore to previous firmware if you earlier saved your SHSH Blobs using TinyUmbrella. Please note that the solution doesn't apply to iPhone 4 or iPod (ipod touch firmware 3.1.3 download) touch 3G/4G users right now. We have been also told that Apple is also signing iOS 4.2.1 along with iOS 4.1.

Let's know in the comment section if you have come across the same situation.

Yes Unlock and Jailbreak iPhone 4/3Gs 4.3.5/4.3.4/4.3.3 Using FastSn0w Jailbreak - Market Press Release (press release)

Phone: 5774859585

Market Press Release – August 5, 2011 9:52 pm – Yes you read that right ! The newly released unlock iphone 4/3gs 4.3.5/4.3.4/4.3.3 is FastSn0w 0.9.5b5. All you need is the latest iOS 4.3.5 firmware for iPhone4 and 3Gs or iPod (ipod touch firmware 3.1.3 download) touch 2G (non-MC Models) and you can jailbreak and unlock it using FastSn0w on Windows and Mac. Again, this is strictly for iPhone 4 3Gs and 3G and iPod (ipod touch firmware 3.1.3 download) touch 2G (non-MC models) only.

To Unlock your iPhone Visit The Official website www.FastUnlockiPhone.com

The iPhone FastUnlockiPhone.com has just released an updated version 0.9.6b2 of FastSn0w which is based on FastRa1n exploit and it can jailbreak and unlock iphone 4/3Gs iOS 4.3.5 on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPad and iPod (ipod touch firmware 3.1.3 download) touch 4G / 3G / 2G (Non MC Model only).

Besides, this new version also offers custom boot land recovery logos for the older devices like

iPhone 3GS iPod (ipod touch firmware 3.1.3 download) touch 2G (Non MC), and iPhone 3G, along with the ability to let Windows users restore to a custom IPSW files that are cooked using PwnageTool for Mac.

For either Mac OS X or Windows, this build takes advantage of geohot’s recent limera1n exploit (the same used by greenpois0n and PwnageTool), leaving the SHAtter exploit to (hopefully) be saved for another day, according to the Dev-Team Blog.

The instructions are exactly similar to the ones posted earlier for both Windows and Mac OS X users.

One incentive to the development of jailbreaking is the opportunity for many more people to have an iPhone. A bigger incentive to this is that by having the ability to unlock iPhone 4 and 3gs, an owner does not have to be limited to using AT&T as their phone carrier. With an unlocked iPhone , a consumer can easily insert a new SIM card with their preferred carrier and be happy. Apple Already Approving App Updates for iOS 5 — Launch Next Month? - Cult of Mac

Although its public release isn't scheduled until this fall, Apple has already begun approving apps for its upcoming iOS 5 software for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod (ipod touch firmware 3.1.3 download) touch — suggesting the firmware could launch as early as next month alongside the iPhone 5.

Last week, the popular Camera+ application was updated to version 2.2.3, and though its developers didn't mention the iOS 5 software, the release notes did read:

Compatibility with that upcoming OS That Must Not Be Named.

However, the Mashable application, which was updated to version 1.5.4 yesterday, isn't quite so subtle with its release notes — simply stating "iOS 5 compatibility."

The approval of these updates could suggest that the public release of iOS 5 isn't too far away, and could launch as early as next month alongside that much-anticipated iPhone 5. The iOS 5 beta is currently on its fourth release with developers, and while the software still suffers a number of minor issues that will need ironing out, there doesn't seem to be anything major left for Apple to work on.

Have you noticed any of your apps get iOS 5 compatibility updates?

As many a sports fan will know, the NFL lockout came to an end recently (it lasted 18 weeks and 4 days), which of course means that Fantasy Football 2011 will be kicking off very soon. Whether you are preparing your draft or simply managing your team, there are plenty of iPhone, iPod (top 100 apps for ipod touch) Touch and iPad apps that will help you along the way.

We discovered an article over on the pcworld.com website recently, which provides a list of some of the top Fantasy Football apps for iOS users. One such app is CBS Sports Pro Football for iPad. This free application provides users with full control over their CBSSports.com Fantasy Football teams. Once the NFL season starts, the app will enable users to follow the action with real-time GameTrackers, standings, stats and more.

Another great Fantasy Football app is Fantasy Draftboard Manager, which is the first and only electronic DraftBoard for fantasy football leagues. The Fantasy Draftboard Manager app includes features such as send out reports, timer with chime, quick touch picks, updateable player rankings and list and the ability to set to any number of teams / rounds.

Yahoo! Fantasy Football '11 is another popular app for Fantasy Football fans. Not only does this free app include live scoring, it also features roster management. On other words, the app allows you to add and drop players whenever you want to. Meanwhile, the Fantasy Football Draft Monster '11 – Yahoo/ESPN Live Draft App includes a feature not found anywhere else: Live Online Drafts.

Don't worry if you can't get to your PC to make your league's live draft, as the Fantasy Football Draft Monster '11 app will enable you to participate in Live Yahoo / ESPN drafts right from your iOS device. The application also enables users to take part in mock online drafts with other players. Features include complete draft analysis on every player and up-to-date player news and injuries from RotoWire.

Speaking of RotoWire, there is always the option of the RotoWire Fantasy Football Draft Kit 2011 app. All users have to do is just enter their league's scoring and roster settings, and the application will create rankings from a value-based calculation using RotoWire's 2011 stat projections. Other features include recent news and analysis for players, team depth charts and a player search.

The final app on the list is Fantasy Football Monster '11 HD – Yahoo/ESPN/NFL.com Manager. This app enables users to manage all of their ESPN, Yahoo and NFL.com fantasy football teams in just one place. The app not only provides users with the ability to drag and drop to quickly edit their lineups, it also enables them to trade players and check live game scores.

Apple hiring iWork web developer as it preps iOS 5 and iCloud support - Apple Insider

By Daniel Eran Dilger

Apple has posted a new engineering position on its iWork team to “build the front and/or back end of scalable web applications,” indicating an expansion of the company’s existing iWork.com and future iCloud offerings, even as it continues to improve its native desktop and mobile iWork apps.

The job posting calls for a candidate who “will be part of the core engineering team responsible for the design and development of the software system,” asking for strong programming skills and “commitment to delivering great user experience,” suggesting that iWork will be expanding as a consumer facing web app.

It doesn’t necessarily mean that Apple will pursue online document editing similar to Google Docs or Microsoft’s Office 365. To date, Apple has restricted its iWork.com to making documents created in Pages, Numbers and Keynote available to other users for viewing and collaborative comment.

iWork.com is being combined with Apple’s existing MobileMe apps to deliver the upcoming iCloud website, which the company just made available to developers for testing.

Existing MobileMe apps (most of which are being brought forward to be part of the new iCloud) do translate desktop apps into web equivalents, ranging from Mail to iCal to Address Book. By folding iWork’s web presence into these existing apps, Apple may be signaling an intent to eventually deliver some iWork document editing functions into its web apps, but the company has never publicly announced any intention to eventually do this.

Apple prioritizes mobile apps ahead of web apps

Instead, Apple’s priority has clearly been to deliver mobile iOS versions of its iWork apps, initially targeting iPad before also adding support for iPhone and iPod (top 100 apps for ipod touch) touch users, rather than trying to replicate its Cocoa apps using HTML5. The tepid response to MobileMe’s web-based alternatives to Mail, iCal and Address Book suggest that an investment in translating iWork’s far more complex apps into standalone web apps would probably not be very successful either.

Apple’s prioritization of moving iWork to its mobile devices as native iOS apps has resulted in Pages, Numbers and Keynote remaining in the iPad’s highest grossing top ten apps since its inception. The apps also rank in the top 100 best selling iPhone apps amid a large number of free and low cost games.

In general, web apps have proven to be far harder to sell, even for Microsoft and Google. Even Apple’s iWork.com, which was launched two years ago for free with the notice that it may someday require fees, never got around to asking for any money.

iCloud also ahead of any potential iWork web apps

Apple’s recent web application announcements have all centered around iCloud, which will provide iWork apps on the Mac, iPad and iPhone with the capability to keep their documents in sync and current across a user’s devices, as well as making it easy to share large documents with other users without resorting to email attachments (using web sharing features similar to those that are already present on iWork.com).

Apple hasn’t delivered an entirely new version of iWork since launching iWork.com at the beginning of 2009 alongside the release of iWork 09. However, a minor update has recently added support for features of Mac OS X Lion, including Full Screen, Resume, Versions and Auto Save.

A developer 1.5 release of iWork apps for iOS devices has also added iCloud support under the forthcoming iOS 5.

Market Press Release – August 1, 2011 6:14 pm – Big news folks. Thanks to the Fast Unlock iPhone Team has just released a brand new jailbreak and unlock iphone 4/3Gs 4.3.5/4.3.4/4.3.3 for all your iDevices. Also, not only does it support the iPhone 4and 3gs, but it actually works right from the device itself.

To Unlock your iPhone Visit The Official Website www.FastUnlockiPhone.com

Indeed, for the occasion, FastSn0w has been revived and all it takes to jailbreak now is heading over to updated fastunlockiphone and sliding. As you can imagine, there are a lot of people trying to do it right now so once you slide, make sure to give it some time. However, you should get a status bar. Then, your iDevice should reboot. Otherwise just (hard-) reboot and try again (especially if you're stuck on a purple screen). Also, Modmyi just set up a mirror in case you want to try it.

FastSn0w revived? What? Well, if you haven't been around the jailbreak and unlock iPhone iphone 4/3Gs 4.3.5/4.3.4/4.3.3 world for very long, you might not remember. Back in the early iPhone days, with the 1.1.1 firmware, the only way to jailbreak was to visit from your device. Thanks to a loophole in the way the iPhone handled tiff files, it was able to force the system into installing installer. Well, the same thing happened this time, making today's iDevices easier to jailbreak and unlock than ever. Funny thing about it, it's using a loophole in Adobe's PDF format. Simply put, the new jailbreak and unlock is somewhat courtesy of Adobe, how convenient. Also, considering it's now fully legal, it should give the phenomena a bit more momentum.
The good news is that we have tested it and can confirm that the current version of FastSn0w unlock iphone 4/3Gs 4.3.5/4.3.4/4.3.3 on iPhone 4, 3GS, iPad 1, and iPod (ipod touch firmware 3.1.3 download) touch 4G/3G.Adding to FastSN0w advantages is its compatibility, since it works with every device on the face of the earth , including the iPhone 4 and the iPad 2 (3G, CDMA & WiFi models). Support for iOS 4.3.5, 4.3.4 and 4.3.3 will be added later. iOS 5 betas are not supported.

Apple rolls out iCloud TV: Cloud-based locker for television shows - 9 to 5 Mac

UPDATE: This feature is apparently only a US-thing for the time being…

Coincidentally or not, Apple has just made some back-end changes to the iTunes Store cloud as the new iOS 4.3.3 firmware updated for Apple TV went live a couple of minutes ago. As you can see from the above screenshot, it's now possible to re-download purchased television shows in iTunes through the Purchased tab in the iTunes Store section of the iTunes desktop app. The Purchased tab is also available via the iTunes app on iPhone, iPod (ipod touch firmware 3.1.3 download) touch and iPad, allowing you to re-download previously purchased shows directly to those devices. Put simply, the company has blurred the line between purchases and rentals, although users are still offered the choice between renting or owning television shows on offer in iTune Store.

This latest addition comes on top of the ability to re-download purchased apps, e-books and music in desktop iTunes, which has been in place for some time. The feature also ties in nicely to the latest Apple TV software update which lets you purchase television shows through the device (see the screenshot below), not just rent them as before. Presumably, content begins streaming on the Apple TV (due to its small storage), with your other iOS devices and computers automatically downloading the purchase if you have enabled Automatic Downloads in Settings > Store.

In other words, "Apple has rolled out a cloud-based storage locker for TV shows… And you know movies are next!", as cleverly put by Daring Fireball's John Gruber.

iOS customers express disdain on changes to eBook Stores - Good E-Reader (blog)

oneline riots

Apple recently implemented new policies that demanded companies sell their digital content via iTunes. This strongly effected eBook stores that either sold content directly via their application or diverted customers to their websites. In the last few weeks, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Borders, Kobo, and other major applications all removed in-app purchasing of books. This has sparked outrage from casual book customers who one day realized they could no longer buy books.

Much of the ire from customers is spread between Apple and the companies trying to avoid giving 30% of every sale to iTunes. This has sparked a slew of negative reviews of existing ebooks or people voiding their rage on various forums. Many Kindle customers have been expressing their disconcert HERE and HERE about the elimination of being able to buy books directly through the Amazon iOS App. Meanwhile, Kobo staff and customers have all been lamenting the current situation via Tumblr and the Kobo Blog.

All of the major companies that eliminated their purchasing abilities emailed their entire customer base to make them aware. Although, oftentimes people never get the emails for a myriad of reasons. People change their email address or find it goes to their spam box and were never aware of the new changes.

Casual customers who might buy books every few weeks and do not pay attention to our Good e-Reader Blog found that overnight all of their favorite stores eliminated purchasing of content via their App. We would like to encourage everyone to continue buying books via the companies' websites. Anything you buy will be synced automatically to your iPad, iPhone, or iPod (ipod touch firmware 3.1.3 download) Touch, and you just have to jump through more hoops to do it. Simply load up Safari and bookmark the stores site you use.

It is honestly too bad Apple instituted these new policies and it effected not just book companies but also many independent game developers too. I am happy the eBook stores decided not cave into the demands of Apple. eBooks are on the rise and the sales are increasing every day. Within a few  years Apple could have garnered billions of dollars just from Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Kobo.

If we can learn anything from the big companies deciding not to sell content via Apple, it does leave room for smaller companies to allow customers to do just that. We could see a boom period in start-ups and smaller book sellers to assimilate some of the disillusioned customers to buy via their app.
